Best 20+ Chestnut Brown Hair Ideas You NEED to Try

I’ve been on this huge hair-spiration kick lately, and I’m honestly obsessed with where it’s taken me.

You know those weeks where you just can’t stop saving pictures to a single Pinterest board? That’s been me with brunette shades for the past month or so.

My phone is literally just screenshots of hair at this point, and my poor stylist is going to have a full inbox when I finally book my next appointment. I keep telling myself I’m going to “narrow it down” before I go in, but then I see another gorgeous shade and the whole list resets.

I’ve gathered up all my absolute favorite shades and styles, from the deepest cocoa brown hair tones to the softest milk chocolate brown hair vibes.

Rich espresso brunette

Starting off strong with the deepest, darkest, most luxurious shade. This dark chocolate brown hair color is giving expensive coffee shop energy, and I am so here for it.

Warm chestnut balayage

Oh my gosh, this one. The way the warm tones just melt down through the lengths is unreal.

If you want dimensional brunette hair without committing to anything too bold, this is your sign.

Soft cinnamon highlights

I have to tell you, the first time I saw a girl with these cinnamon-toned highlights at a coffee shop, I literally followed her out to ask who her stylist was. She was so sweet about it too! Anyway, this color has been living rent-free in my head ever since. It’s warm, it’s subtle, it’s perfect.

Glossy mocha waves

That shine, are you kidding me? This is the kind of soft brown hair that genuinely looks like a hair commercial come to life. I’d literally drink an entire pot of green tea every day if I thought it would get my hair to look like this.

Chestnut brown lob

A perfect chestnut brown hair color paired with a lob is just chef’s kiss. There’s something about that mid-length cut that makes the color look even richer somehow.

Velvet brunette layers

I’m getting major “main character in a moody indie film” vibes from this one. The layers add so much movement, and the velvety brown tone is everything.

It’s sophisticated without trying too hard, which is honestly the dream. I keep going back to this picture because it’s exactly the kind of brunette that looks just as good thrown up in a claw clip as it does freshly blown out.

Dark caramel ribbons

Caramel brown hair is genuinely the warmest, most welcoming shade ever. These ribbon-like highlights are woven so naturally throughout, it almost looks like she’s been kissed by the sun.

Toffee brown curls

Toffee. Just say it out loud, doesn’t it sound delicious? That’s exactly what this color tastes like, if hair colors could taste like something. The curls just bring it all to life.

Chestnut money pieces

Money pieces are honestly my favorite low-commitment way to switch things up. You frame the face, add a little brightness, and boom – you look like a different person.

I actually got money pieces a few summers ago and totally surprised my mom with them when I went home. She didn’t even recognize me from across the parking lot at the grocery store, which I’m still convinced is a compliment.

Chocolate chestnut blend

This blend right here is basically a cup of cocoa brown hair perfection. The way the lighter and darker browns just flow into each other is the kind of artistry I deeply respect.

Dimensional brunette melt

A proper color melt is something I think every brunette should experience at least once.

It’s when your stylist seamlessly blends multiple tones from root to tip, and the result is this dreamy, almost fluid-looking color.

Golden chestnut shine

If you’re someone who tends to gravitate toward warmer tones, this golden chestnut situation is calling your name.

Long chestnut layers

Long hair with long layers and chestnut tones is just THE combination. I’m convinced this is the universal “princess” formula. Every time I see hair like this in real life I have to actively stop myself from staring.

Soft auburn undertones

Okay so when I saw this, I immediately texted my best friend Maddie because she’s been going back and forth for months about adding some reddish tones to her hair.

The subtle auburn peeking through is just *so* gorgeous in certain lighting. It’s warm without being too red, which is the sweet spot you want.

She ended up booking the appointment, by the way, and I’m not exaggerating when I say she sent me approximately 47 selfies the day she got it done.

Deep brunette gloss

A gloss treatment is something I genuinely think gets overlooked way too often. It’s not a full color change, it’s more like a filter for your hair.

The way it deepens the existing tone and adds that ridiculous mirror-like shine is honestly worth every penny. I got one done before a wedding last spring and people kept asking if I’d gotten my hair “done” without being able to put their finger on what was different.

Face-framing caramel strands

Brunette with caramel highlights specifically placed around the face is genuinely such a flattering look on basically everyone.

Classic chestnut blowout

There’s really no beating a classic blowout when your color is this good. The volume, the bounce, the shine – it’s everything.

This is the kind of look I attempt at home with my round brush approximately once a year, only to give up halfway through and end up with one perfect side and one tragic side.

Muted copper brown

For my girls who want a tiny hint of red without going full copper, this muted version is everything.

Chestnut brown bob

Wrapping it up with the cutest little chestnut bob, because how could I not? A bob just makes any color look more intentional, more polished, more put-together.
