Engagement Hairstyles: How to Look Like a Goddess in Your Photos Without Trying Too Hard
Okay bestie, pull up a chair and get comfortable because we need to have a very serious, very urgent heart-to-heart. We need to talk about your engagement photos. I know, I know. You have the ring – and it is stunning, obviously – and you are probably still floating on that cloud of “OMG we are getting married.” But then the reality sets in.
I feel like engagement hairstyles are the unsung heroes of the whole wedding planning process. Everyone talks about the wedding dress and the wedding hair, but the engagement shoot is technically the “soft launch” of your wedding era. It is the photos that are going to be on your Save the Dates. It is the photos your grandma is going to frame and put on her mantle next to the picture of your cousin that you secretly hate. So, yeah, the pressure is kind of on.
I have this vivid memory of my own engagement shoot panic – or actually, my best friend’s shoot that I helped with. She decided to get a haircut the day before. Rule number one: never get a haircut the day before a major event. She ended up with bangs she didn’t ask for. We spent two hours in her bathroom with a flat iron and a lot of hairspray trying to pin them back so she didn’t look like a terrified 5-year-old. We laughed about it later over tacos, but in the moment? It was a crisis. I learned my lesson.
So, I went on a massive Pinterest deep dive last night – seriously, I ignored my laundry pile for three hours to do this – to curate the absolute best hairstyles for your shoot.
The “I Woke Up Like This” Waves
If you want a look that says “I’m effortless and naturally gorgeous,” this is the one.
Soft waves with a middle part are honestly the gold standard for engagement photos. It frames your face perfectly and it just looks so healthy. I love this style because it moves with you. If you are doing one of those “walking away holding hands” shots, your hair is going to bounce and look amazing. Just make sure to use a little shine serum so it catches the light. There is nothing worse than dull hair in golden hour lighting.
The Best of Both Worlds
Can’t decide if you want your hair up or down? Don’t. Have both.
A half-up half-down hairstyle with curls is my personal favorite because it is practical but pretty. It keeps the hair out of your face – which is crucial if it is a windy day, trust me – but you still get that romantic length flowing down your back. I remember doing a photoshoot on a beach once with my hair fully down, and I spent the entire time spitting hair out of my lip gloss. It was not cute. This style solves that problem.
The “Clean Girl” Aesthetic
If you want to show off your bone structure and maybe some killer earrings, get that hair off your neck.
A low bun with face-framing pieces is so chic. It is giving “off-duty model.” I love how elegant this looks, especially if you are wearing a dress with a high neckline or a cool back detail that you want to show off. The key here is the face-framing pieces.
A Little Bit of Sparkle
Sometimes you just need to be a little extra.
Loose curls styled with hair accessories add such a nice touch of personality. Whether it is a pearl clip, a velvet bow, or a sparkly barrette, it elevates a simple hairstyle into something special. I am obsessed with bows right now – they are having such a moment.
The Power Pony
Who says ponytails are just for running errands? When done right, they are high fashion.
A sleek low ponytail with a glossy finish is for the cool bride. It is sophisticated and sharp. I love this because it stays put.
Soft and Dreamy
If you are going for that fairytale, storybook romance vibe, you need texture.
A romantic updo with soft texture is just stunning.
Hollywood Glamour
For the girl who wants to feel like a movie star on the red carpet.
Side-swept waves for engagement photos are pure drama. It opens up one side of your face – perfect for showing off those cheekbones – and gives you a cascading waterfall of hair on the other side. It is sexy. It is bold. I love this style if you are wearing a strapless dress or something with one shoulder. It balances out the skin exposure. You definitely need some strong-hold hairspray for this one to keep it all to one side, but the payoff is worth it.
Boho Chic
If you are taking photos in nature, like a forest or a field, braids are a must.
A braided half-up engagement hairstyle adds so much beautiful texture. I am a sucker for a good braid. It feels earthy and grounded but still intricate. You can do a fishtail, a french braid, or just a simple twist. It keeps the hair tamed but adds visual interest. I think this style looks incredible from the back and side profiles. If your photographer takes those “walking away” shots, the braid is going to be the star of the show.
Timeless Elegance
When in doubt, go classic.
A classic chignon with an elegant finish is the kind of hairstyle you look back on in twenty years and still love. It isn’t trendy, it is timeless. It is neat, tidy, and poised. I love this for city shoots where you are wearing a blazer or a sleek dress. It matches that urban energy. It says “I have my life together.”
Here is the real tea, bestie: Your engagement photos are about capturing the love between you and your person.
Your hair is just the accessory. So don’t stress too much about it being “perfect.”
But definitely do a practice run at home. Try curling your hair the way you want it. Take a few selfies in the mirror to see how it photographs.
I am honestly debating between the “Soft Waves” and the “Half-Up” look for my next event. I just love having hair in my face a little bit, makes me feel safe. What are you thinking?
