I’ve been on this huge journey lately trying to figure out what my face should actually look like between the hours of 9 and 5.
You know that feeling, right? When you wake up at like 6:45 a.m., still half asleep, and you have exactly seven minutes to throw something on your face before you have to log into that morning Teams call where everyone can absolutely see your pores in HD. It’s honestly such a specific kind of pressure, and I think a lot of us have been getting it wrong for years.
So I’ve been doing a deep dive into the whole concept of office makeup, and I gotta say, my entire approach has shifted.
It’s not about looking like you tried hard, it’s about looking like you slept eight hours and drank a green juice (even when you definitely didn’t).
Soft matte skin
Okay, starting with the foundation of literally everything: the skin. A soft matte finish is honestly the holy grail for office makeup because it photographs beautifully on those grainy webcams but doesn’t look flat or powdery in person.
The trick is to only powder your T-zone and leave the rest of your face with a little bit of natural moisture peeking through.
Glossy nude lips
I’m obsessed with this look. A glossy nude lip is the easiest way to look expensive without trying too hard, and it’s the perfect “I have my life together” finishing touch.
Brown mascara look
Listen, swapping your black mascara for brown was honestly the biggest game changer for my work makeup routine this year. It softens the entire face and makes you look so much more approachable, which is genuinely great for office environments.
I actually started doing this after a really awkward thing happened to me at my first big girl job. My manager pulled me aside after a presentation and asked if I was feeling okay because I “looked really tired.”
I was wearing my usual heavy black mascara, and I realized the harshness was making my under-eyes look way darker than they actually were. Switched to brown the next week and got compliments for days. True story!
Champagne shimmer lids
This is the lid look I reach for when I want to feel a little fancy but it’s still technically a Wednesday. A wash of champagne shimmer across the mobile lid is so universally flattering, and it catches the light during meetings in the prettiest way.
Just keep the rest of your eye really minimal so it stays office-appropriate.
Peachy blush glow
Peach is the most underrated blush color, I’ll die on this hill. It mimics that natural flush you get after a quick walk outside, which is exactly the energy you want when you’re trying to look alert at 9:15 a.m.
Clean girl makeup
The clean girl thing isn’t going anywhere, and honestly? It’s the perfect interview makeup formula. It tells the hiring manager that you’re polished and put-together without screaming for attention.
Think slicked back hair, dewy skin, a tiny bit of brow gel, and a pinky-nude lip. Done.
Soft winged liner
If you want a little bit of definition without going full glam, a soft winged liner is your best friend. The key word here is soft, like you smudge it out with a tiny brush so it has that lived-in, slightly diffused look.
It’s still a wing, but it’s a wing that’s been to therapy.
Natural fluffy brows
Brows are doing the most lifting in any business makeup look. Fluffy, brushed-up natural brows make you look young, alert, and like you have great genetics, even when you’re running on three hours of sleep and an oat milk latte.
Rosy monochrome makeup
Monochrome makeup is so chic for the office because it’s intentional but still soft. Use the same rosy shade on your cheeks, lips, and just the tiniest bit on your lids.
It looks really pulled-together but takes about four minutes to actually do.
Fresh-faced complexion
Sometimes you just need to look like a really well-rested version of yourself, and that’s the whole vibe here. Skip the full coverage foundation and reach for a tinted moisturizer or a skin tint instead.
You want to see your actual skin texture peeking through, not a mask. I promise, your boss will not care about your one tiny freckle.
Taupe smokey eyes
Now this is for when you have an evening work event after the office and you don’t have time to redo your whole face. A soft taupe smokey eye is sophisticated enough for the boardroom but easily transitions into after-work drinks.
The grey-brown tone is way more wearable than a charcoal smokey, which can look a bit much under fluorescent office lighting.
Minimal concealer routine
I want you to picture this with me. It’s Monday morning, you’ve snoozed your alarm four times, and you literally have eleven minutes before your first call.
This is when the minimal concealer routine saves your entire life. Just dab a little under your eyes, on any redness around your nose, and on any spots that are screaming for attention.
Tap it in with your finger, set the under-eyes with a tiny bit of powder, and you’re genuinely done. It looks 100 times better than full foundation when you’re in a rush.
Cream bronzer finish
Cream bronzer over powder bronzer for work, every single time. It melts into the skin and gives you that “I just got back from a long weekend somewhere coastal” look without any of the actual sun damage.
Subtle inner corner highlight
Such an underrated tip. A tiny dot of shimmery highlighter in the inner corner of your eyes makes you look so awake, and it’s totally subtle enough for any work environment.
It’s the kind of thing where no one knows you did it, but everyone thinks you look really good.
Barely-there eyeliner
For super conservative offices, a barely-there liner is the move. You tightline your upper waterline and it just makes your lashes look thicker without any visible liner.
It’s literally a magic trick.
Soft pink lip combo
A soft pink lip combo is my go-to for any interview makeup situation. You line your lips with a slightly mauve pencil, fill them in lightly, and top it with a soft pink balm or sheer lipstick.
It looks natural but elevated, and there’s no risk of it bleeding or smudging when you’re trying to confidently answer questions about your “biggest weakness.”
Neutral eyeshadow blend
Listen, you cannot go wrong with a neutral eyeshadow blend. We’re talking soft beige in the inner half, a warm brown in the outer corner, and a clean blending brush to smush it all together.
I made the mistake once of trying a really bold blue eye for a big client presentation. Spoiler alert: it was a disaster, the blue smudged into my crease within an hour, and I spent the whole meeting paranoid that I looked like a tired raccoon.
Stick with neutrals for anything important. Save the fun colors for happy hour.
Glowy skin makeup
We’re closing this whole thing out with the look I’m most obsessed with right now: full-on glowy skin makeup. This is for the days when you want to look really expensive without piling on a ton of product.
