Tree Farm Family Photos Outfit Ideas: How to Survive the Holiday Card Chaos Without Losing Your Mind
Okay bestie, grab your biggest mug of hot cocoa. Or maybe wine. I won’t judge, honestly I might join you. We need to have a very serious, very urgent meeting about the most stressful time of the year.
You know exactly the vibe I am talking about. It is that time of year where we all collectively pretend we enjoy standing in a freezing cold field, smiling until our cheeks hurt, just to get that one perfect shot for Instagram or the Christmas card. And look, I love it. I am a sucker for tradition.
I have this vivid memory from two years ago. I decided I was going to be the “organized one” for once. I made a whole mood board. I sent color palettes to my family group chat. I told my boyfriend, “Please, for the love of everything holy, do not wear that neon orange beanie you love.” I thought I had it all under control. We get to the farm, and it had rained the night before. I was wearing these gorgeous suede booties that I hadn’t waterproofed because I am apparently not very smart. Within five minutes, I sank into a mud puddle. My boyfriend was trying so hard not to laugh, but I was literally holding back tears while trying to look festive. We got the shot eventually, but if you zoom in on my face, you can see the panic in my eyes.
So, I am writing this to save you from my muddy, chaotic fate. I went on a massive Pinterest deep dive to find outfits that are actually practical for a farm but still look like they belong in a magazine. We want cozy. We want coordinated but not matchy-matchy (because we aren’t a choir).
The Classic “We Have Our Life Together” Look
You literally cannot go wrong with this combo.
Neutral sweaters paired with denim and boots is the ultimate safety net. It looks good on everyone. Dad looks good, mom looks good, the kids look adorable. I love this because the blue of the denim really pops against the dark green of the Christmas trees. It feels very American classic.
The “Sad Beige” Aesthetic (But Make It Festive)
I know people make fun of the beige trend, but honestly? It photographs so beautifully in nature.
This cream and beige outfit with cozy layers is for the mom who wants that ethereal, soft look. When you are surrounded by dark green trees and maybe some brown mud, wearing light cream colors makes you stand out. You become the focal point. It reflects light onto your face too, which is a nice little photography hack. I would layer this with a long trench coat or a fuzzy scarf. Just be super careful with coffee spills on the drive over. I am not allowed to drink coffee in the car when I wear white anymore because I cannot be trusted.
Plaid is a Neutral, Fight Me
Is it even a visit to a tree farm if someone isn’t wearing flannel? I don’t think so.
A plaid shirt styled with jeans for family photos is such a timeless choice. It gives that rustic, lumberjack-chic vibe that fits the setting perfectly. The key here is to not have everyone in the same plaid. That looks like a uniform. Have dad in a plaid shirt, maybe you in a solid color with a plaid scarf, and the kids in denim. Break it up. I love how red or green plaid looks against the snow if you are lucky enough to have a white Christmas.
Earthy and Grounded
If you want something a little more sophisticated than jeans, earth tones are your best friend.
Soft knit sweaters with earth-tone pants creates such a warm, inviting palette. Think olive greens, browns, rust oranges, and camel. These colors harmonize with the nature around you instead of competing with it. I tried this palette for a shoot with my friends last year and we looked like an indie folk band album cover. It was a vibe.
Texture is Everything
When you are wearing simple colors, you have to play with the fabric to make it interesting.
Coordinated neutral family outfits with texture is the secret sauce to professional-looking photos. Mix a waffle knit with a smooth cotton.
The Cable Knit Classic
There is nothing that says “winter” quite like a chunky cable knit sweater.
This cable knit sweater outfit with winter boots is my personal go-to. It is just so easy. You throw on the sweater, leggings or jeans, and your cutest boots and you are done. The pattern in the knit adds that visual interest we talked about.
Contrast is Key
If you have lighter hair or want to really pop against the background, dark denim is the way to go.
Cream tops paired with dark denim creates a really nice, high-contrast look that is super slimming and flattering. The dark jeans ground the outfit, while the light top draws attention to your happy, smiling faces.
Bundle Up, Buttercup
Sometimes it is just too cold to be cute without accessories. Lean into the layers.
Warm layered outfits with scarves are essential if you live somewhere where “winter” actually means winter. Don’t try to be a hero and not wear a coat.
Here is the real secret to getting the perfect shot, though. It isn’t just about the clothes. It is about the mood.
If you are stressed out, yelling at your partner to stand up straight, or fussing over every little hair, it shows in the photos. Your eyes look tense. Trust me, I have been there.
So, pick your outfits ahead of time. Lay them out on the bed the night before to make sure they actually go together and you don’t have a mismatched sock crisis ten minutes before you have to leave. Pack snacks for the kids (and for yourself, let’s be honest).
And once you get there? Just let go. Let the kids run around. Let your hair get a little windswept. Laugh when someone trips over a tree root. The best photos are usually the candid ones in between the posed shots anyway. Those are the ones you will want to frame.
I am definitely going to attempt the neutral sweater look this year. Wish me luck with keeping it clean! And if you see a girl stuck in the mud at the tree farm next weekend… just wave and keep walking. Let me know which vibe you are going for! Are you Team Plaid or Team Neutral? Catch you later, bestie!
